What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery involves the technique by which a woman's breasts are made larger. This is performed by using an implant, usually filled with saline solution to increase the size of the breast. The implant is placed under the chest muscle (pectoralis major muscle) or above the muscle via several common incisions. This is usually performed as an outpatient under general or deep sedation anesthesia.
Who benefits from breast augmentation?
- women who are bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too small
- weight loss has changed the size and shape of their breasts
- after having children, their breasts have become smaller and have lost their firmness
- dress that fit well around the hips are often too large at the bust line
- one breast is noticeably smaller than the other
- they feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or form fitting top
Is it safe?
Each year, thousands of women undergo breast augmentation surgery. Currently the surgery is performed using the saline filled implants. Silicone gel, had been used, but are under study to answer questions raised about their safety. To date, multi center randomized studies do NOT show any increase in health risks due to the use of the silicone gel, but for now, are only available in medical research studies. Surgery always involves risks, such as bleeding, infection, or implant failure. Modern technique and carefully performed surgery minimizes risks but cannot guarantee a perfect result every time. What is a breast lift?
Mastopexy, involves reconstructing the breast by removing excess skin and correcting droopiness (ptosis), with little or no change in total breast volume. This is most appropriate for women who are pleased with the size of their breasts but desire tightening and reshaping to a more youthful appearance.
How is the surgery performed? What are the risks?
There are several techniques used. They depend on the surgeon's preference as well as certain patient factors that may affect which technique is best for them. The most common technique is demonstrated in the images here. Scars are usually well hidden from view by regular clothing. Occasionally, only a small amount of skin is removed for women with mild to moderate amount of droopiness (ptosis). In such cases, a limited incision only around the nipple is used to remove the excess skin.

Like all surgery, it is impossible to eliminate risks altogether. Bleeding, infection, asymmetry, nipple sensation loss, or skin loss are known complications. Using careful technique and expertise our doctors strive to minimize all risks.

What if my breasts are droopy and too small?
In women who have breast fed their children, this is a common problem. Their breasts undergo atrophy or "shrinkage" after breast feeding, but the skin around the breast doesn't retract to the same degree. In such cases, a breast augmentation can be combined with a mastopexy to correct both concerns. A consultation with one of our trained plastic surgeons will help answer any further questions you have. Thank you.

Also, women wishing to breast feed should delay plastic surgery as this procedure may compromise a woman's ability to breast feed. Using careful technique and expertise our doctors strive to minimize all risks.
